“Somewhere Close to Home”
When Melanie’s dad passed away a couple weeks ago, Tesha and I decided to write a song for her. We wrote this after his funeral- I wrote out the lyrics, Tesha came up with a melody and we slammed the whole thing together in a little over an hour. We gave a recording of the song to Melanie that night. It’s a little corny, but it felt right at the time.
Theres a new star in the night sky/Burning with love and life/And although its true, when you heard the news/It cut you like a knife/Try to remember/Every golden day/And let his life be a shining light/To guide you on your way/And please realize/That wherever he has gone,/No matter how far-flung the star/He’s somewhere close to home
Maybe he’s drinkin wine with Buddha/Or laughin it up with Christ/Or maybe he’s somewhere we don’t know/That’s somehow twice as nice/And maybe he is paying that ferryman/Or he’s just gone back to the loam/Wherever he is, you can be sure/He’s somewhere close to home
